Barabarella in Fulham High road was an icon of style and sophistication for the past 30 years, and with a complete makeover and re-launch by owner Jack Freud back in October last year it has re-established itself as a worthy contender of this title once again.

Last night saw the launch of Barbarella’s 1980’s menu at 1980’s prices promotion which will run for the next four weeks, using an old menu salvaged from the period of it’s original opening 30 years ago, with so many fabulous blasts from the past which for most of us were either all-but-forgotten, or of an era before we were born! To take advantage of this offer though, with Entres at £1 – £2 and Mains from £2 – £4 you’ll have to be quick as only 50 covers of the 120 seat restaurant are available at such ridiculous prices!

Guests were treated to Sprizzato Spritzers on arrival before settling down in the elegant dining room, to dishes of yesteryear For those of you who remember, think rockmelon and parma ham, Chicken liver pate with toasted brioche and spicy tuna tartare. A popular option was the Pollo Ala Latin Lover, or Chicken filled with butter garlic and parsley (otherwise known as chicken Kiev) on a bed of mash, oozing with garlicy indulgence, although I’m not sure I’d want my lover reeking of garlic these days, even if He was Latin! My absolute favourite the rabbit and fennel stew was a total winner, and we finished off with tiramisu or berry trifle for desert. Everything was cooked and presented beautifully, and sometimes with an ironic twist by newly appointed Head Chef Lauren Clement-Delbos, bringing back fond memories for me at least, of ‘Cordon Bleu’ cook books, complete with sumptuous full colour photos, and of My Mothers’ dinner parties, planned to perfection from said cookery books at a time when this fare was ‘tres chic’!

Travelling Foodies: A Guide To Eating Out In Vancouver

Deciding where to eat out in the Canadian city of Vancouver is like asking a child to choose their favourite sweet treat in a shop full of sweet treats; they’re all equally delicious in their own right and it’s much better to educate the taste buds than to stick to the same flavours (in my view, anyway).
