Verve Couture’s ‘Shaken and stirred’ dinner and cabaret showcase opened last month at Floridita in Wardour st, Soho and what a night to remember! The venue has a long history as a Burlesque style club and being a somewhat  brash, glam and glitzy venue, it’s perfectly suited to a stylish burlesque/cabaret review and this event didn’t disappoint!

The set opened with a couple of numbers from organiser and compere Zak Black, accompanied by the amazing Mark Marlowe Jazz Trio, and from there the scene was set for a sizzling night of cabaret and burlesque, everything one would expect from a world class act, complete with shaken and spinning nipple tassels in the form of the fabulous ‘Folly Mixtures’ strip tease, naked fire-eaters, salsa and tango dancers, a hula hoop gymnastic routine and a ‘feather fan dance’ guaranteed to have even the most unflappable feeling decidedly stirred! The only thing that let it down for me is that I hate being dragged up on stage for ‘organised fun, and the end of the show saw the majority of the 250 strong audience were up on the dance floor for the finale of lessons in Brazilian dance, but hey, if like me, it doesn’t float your boat, you can always move to the bar, off to the side and watch everyone else make fools of themselves!

Food-wise, with plenty of choice including vegetarian options from either a-la-carte dining, or the set menu, I had the crumbed squid and rocket salad, followed by grilled chicken skewers with spicy dips, and a gingerbread cheesecake with raspberry coulis to follow, accompanied by a “Hemingway” cocktail, and at £19.50 for two courses, and £24.00 for three, it represents amazing value for money. Although the set menu wasn’t terribly adventurous, it was all beautifully presented, with good-sized portions, and well-seasoned, and of course there was also the option of the Latin American and Cuban inspired menu which includes lobster, a large selection of steaks with a multitude of more spicy fare, created by resident chef Richard Sawyer. The show can also be viewed over a cocktail at the sumptuous Floridita bar for a small cover charge.

Travelling Foodies: A Guide To Eating Out In Vancouver

Deciding where to eat out in the Canadian city of Vancouver is like asking a child to choose their favourite sweet treat in a shop full of sweet treats; they’re all equally delicious in their own right and it’s much better to educate the taste buds than to stick to the same flavours (in my view, anyway).
