The Hill Station Cocktail Bar, Bringing London Flavours Of The Himalayas

The cosiest bar in London with many stories to tell...

Published Feb 3, 2017 by admin

Set to become Tooting’s best kept secret The Hill Station is the cosiest bar in South West London. The 12 cover bar, hidden away in Broadway Market is a haven for any weary traveller. Start your expedition from Tooting Broadway station and head 250m up the high street, climb the 6.1ft ascent before turning off into the market where the The Hill Station is located.

Brought to Broadway Market in Tooting by the brothers behind The Imperial Durbar in Tooting and La Cabina in East London, The Hill Station is a sanctuary amongst the hustle and bustle of the market. Inspired by intrepid treks in the Himalayas the exterior of the bar is modelled as an authentic mountain shack and an exact replica of a hill station in the Annapurna mountain range in Nepal visited by the owners Alastair and Nicholas Heathcote. The interior takes on the personality of a mountain refuge hut, walls are adorned with reclaimed wood, beaten silver Indian tea trays are used as tables and the serving bar is created from the front of an Indian truck. Memorabilia covering the walls including original mountain equipment, some of which has been used to scale Everest, as well as photos and articles of Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s successful accomplishments.

The drinks menu has been derived using flavours of the Himalayas, local spices, herbs and liquors so that each drink takes you on an adventure and transports you to the Himalayas. Cocktails including The Yak’s Milk containing Yunnan tea, whiskey, fresh lemon juice, homemade spiced sugar syrup, Tamarind paste and shaken with egg white, are served in copper travelling mugs and teacups while sharing cocktails such as the Hill Station Tea with homemade pimiento rum mixed with brandy are presented in travelling flasks.

Guests will be able to call the mountain chef via the bakelite phone to order plates off the mini bar menu. Dishes will include the Basecamp Burger, pink sliced flat iron steak served in a toasted brioche bun with watercress and radish salad, crispy shallot rings, homemade horseradish and mustard mayo with beef dripping fries, and the mountain cheese platter accompanied with homemade saffron and pear chutney and homemade sourdough bread.

In recent months Broadway Market has become one of London’s best foodie destinations. With Tooting’s own craft beer bar and shop, Craft Tooting; Bordelaise, from the owners of the Little Bar and the Little Taperia; Meza, famous around these parts of town as the best Lebanese and more opening every day.

With two successful bars in London already the Heathcote brothers are no strangers to this scene. They first opened The Imperial Durbar, a Tooting institute serving coffee and pastries by day and signature spiced cocktails by night in July 2014, followed by La Cabina a late night bar and dance spot serving cocktails and tunes in Dalston in December 2015.
